On 29th January several changes to the highway code came into affect that dramatically change the way you drive. The new "Hierarchy of road users" gives higher priority to pedestrians and cyclists over larger vehicles. The larger the vehcile you are driving the greater the responsibilty you have to other road users. Priority is now given to pedestrians at junctions, the rule states "At a junction you should five way to pedestrians crossing or wainting to cross a road into which or from you are turning."
The final major rule changes give priority for cyclists when cars are turning. The rule states "You should not cut across cyclists, horse riders or horse drawn vehicles going ahead when you are turning into or out of a junction or changing direction or changing lane." Cyclists are now encoruaged to ride in the center of a lane in order to make themselves more visible to other road users.
